~ Ceramic hand building and surface design
Plates, Bowls, Cups & Vases:
Students learn to make vessels and glaze them in this section. No experience needed to transform soft wet clay into colorfully glazed ceramic dishes for everyday use or special occasions. In the first class we will form clay using the "slump" or "pop-up" method into plates, bowls, or containers. These will be fired in a kiln before the next class when students apply glazes in the next step of creating food-safe dishes. Finished pieces can be picked up at the final glaze firing. Maren will help you develop designs for decorating your ceramic object. They may be borrowed from designs passed down through the ages or uniquely your own.

The fee is $60 for a two class session. This includes Instruction,
Materials and Firing.
~ Surface design on ceramic tile
Students create a design and glaze on pre-fired tile in one class meeting in this section: Step by step instruction in how to design and glaze a unique ceramic tile that may be enjoyed as a trivet or framed wall piece (iron trivet or wooden frame included.) Maren helps you develop a design that reflects your personal imagery and color and translate this into durable ceramic tile. Tiles will be fired in a ceramic kiln and ready to pick up a few days after the class meeting.

$25/Class Meeting. Includes all materials and firings.
~ Ceramic Mask Making
In my small classes, you will receive personal instruction in creating a unique mask out of clay. After it dries it will be fired in a kiln that transforms it to impervious ceramic. In the second class of this two-class session, you may paint your mask with glazes or stains of your choice. After a second kiln firing, your finished mask is ready for pick up.

In this small class you will receive personalized instruction in fabric painting. Students will bring white cotton fabric (or undershirt, tee shirt, scarf, baby clothes, etc) to class and will embellish the cloth with colors and designs. There will be plenty of time and extra materials to experiment. You may take your creations home with you the same day.

~ Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I have to have previous experience to take this class? A: No this is for everyone, no art experience is needed.
Q: Why do I have to sign up for more than one class meeting if I want to make a glazed vessel? A: Clay that has been shaped needs to dry thoroughly before being fired (baked in a ceramic kiln). Once it has been fired, glaze is applied and fired a second time to complete the process.
Q: Will my pieces be safe to hold food? A: Yes, all the glazes we use are lead free and safe for food.
Q: How long does it take before my unglazed clay can be fired? A: It takes about a week for clay to dry enough for the initial "bisque firing."
Q: How long does it take before my piece can go through a "glaze firing?" A: Once the liquid glaze has dried (a few hours) the piece can be fired.
Q: How can I make things without using a potter's wheel? A: Marzart Studio has a slab roller you can use to roll out big slabs of clay that can be "slumped and humped" or "hand-built" into many shapes.
